The Chinook Trail Functional Planning project will focus on studying a potential vehicle connection between from Walsh Drive south along the City limit, and looping easterly to the connection with Métis Trail. This project will utilize past planning information, current design standards and refined project objectives to provide overall guidance for the development of this roadway and utility corridor.
The Chinook Trail alignment in West Lethbridge has been envisioned as a future circulatory roadway along the western City limits for nearly 40 years. The initial planning began with the Chinook Trail Route Location Study in 1984, and was more recently reaffirmed during the Lethbridge Circulation Road Study in 2010 which also included a review of alternative locations for a future river crossing (3rd Bridge). The functional planning for Chinook Trail was not scheduled for several years, however, the requirement for a high voltage transmission powerline in West Lethbridge has advanced the schedule for planning on this portion of Chinook Trail from Walsh Dr to Métis.
