What is the Fairmont Lake bank rehabilitation project?

The east end of Fairmont Pond has experienced numerous flooding events due to precipitation throughout the years. The park currently consists of the City’s standard turf grass which has very shallow roots and is mowed right to the edge of the pond. As a result of the fluctuating water levels, erosion has worn significant amounts of the banks on the north and south side of the pond.

Design work is currently being undertaken to rehabilitate the banks on the east lobe of Fairmont Pond. This work will include:

  • Redefining the pond edge by adding clay, rock and topsoil.
  • Introducing a ‘no-mow’ zone approximately 6.0 meters from the water’s edge all the way around the pond edge.
  • Planting native grasses, flowers and pond and wetland plant species around the edge within that no-mow zone and into the water.
  • Adding native shrubs that thrive on having wet roots in a few places along the edge for visual interest and improving biodiversity in the park.

The City of Lethbridge strives to improve local ecosystems and the environment. This park and pond is the perfect space to incorporate improving water quality, increasing biodiversity and adding naturalized spaces back into the park.

How does this project impact me?

Residents will notice construction crews in the park's east half stripping topsoil along the water edge, adding clay, soil and rock to rebuild the banks and finally, planting native grass and flower seeds, sod and wetland plants along the edge to stabilize the soil.

The pond footprint, shoreline and size will remain the much the same, though residents and frequent users of Fairmont Park will notice a change to the appearance of the pond edge. This will include taller, native species in place of turf grass and pockets of wetland plants along the edge and in the shallow water. Please note that details of the project are subject to change and adjustments.

Construction is tentatively scheduled for spring 2025.
