Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs.

Jane’s Walk takes place in many cities around the world. Everyone is welcome to join in a free walk exploring the history and stories that shape our everyday urban experience. Through the simple act of walking together and discussing what makes a neighbourhood, Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into strong and resourceful communities.

Held annually on the first weekend of May, the event was created in 2007 in Toronto by friends of the urban thinker Jane Jacobs and Lethbridge has participated since 2011.

2025 Walk Schedule

Friday May 2, 2025

4 Takes on Henderson Lake – 1:00 PM

This unique Jane’s Walk invites you to see a familiar park from a variety of different perspectives. Meet at Henderson Lake, on the path near Nikka Yuko’s Bunk Centre.


Downtown Murals with Darcy Logan - 4:00 PM

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge will host this featuring recent additions to the City of Lethbridge’s Public Art collection. A walking tour of downtown murals will be held on Friday, May 2 from 4-6pm, led by mural artist and Casa galleries curator Darcy Logan. Meet at Casa - 230 8 St S.


Sunridge Park: How a Natural Stormpond Brings Nature Into the City – 5:00 PM

Looping through Sunridge Park, we will discuss how using natural vegetation to manage stormwater can create positive benefits for wildlife, water quality, and local residents. We will introduce the concept of green infrastructure, identify the pros and cons of creating greenspaces similar to Sunridge Park and discuss the local flora and fauna that make this park their home. Meet at Sunridge Park, entrance off Rocky Mountain Blvd W.


Waste and Recycling Centre Tour – 5:00 PM - REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

The tour will start at the Galt Museum Parking Lot where the group will get on a bus out to the Waste and Recycling Centre. Participants will hear a brief history of waste & recycling in Lethbridge and explore key sites at the Waste & Recycling Centre such as the Recycling Facility, Organics Facility, and the landfill. Children over the age of 12 are welcome. A guardian must accompany participants under the age of 18. All participants must wear sturdy, closed toed footwear. Steel toes are recommended. This tour will include an outdoor component, and we recommend dressing for the weather. Registration is required. Meet at Galt Museum parking lot to board the bus. Please register here.



Saturday May 3, 2025

Meeting Medicinal Plants in the River Bottom - 10:00 AM

Join this Jane’s Walk to connect with the Old Man River and learn about some of the medicinal plants that grow in the river bottom. Walking together will allow us to explore how our modern-day relationships with these plant beings have deep, entangled histories. Through the plants we can learn about connected topics such as Blackfoot worldview, honourable harvest, Indigenous languages, environmental care, Western herbalism, herbal preparation methods, etc. Expect to walk along the river for about 1.5 km at a slow pace with multiple stops to look, listen, taste, and share. Meet at the Old Man River parking lot at the end of Botteril Bottom Road.


Jane's Ride: More Murals! Cycling Tour - 1:00 PM

Join the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge and BikeLane on a cycling tour of local public art highlighting new murals and more. Have you ever seen an artwork in public and wondered "Who made that? What is it about? How did it get there?" We have answers! Starting in the Warehouse District, the tour includes stops in the downtown core, London Road, Agnes Davidson and Henderson Lake before heading back west along 7th Ave S. Having learned more about the art we encounter in our daily lives, we close the loop at Theoretically Brewing where rest, refreshment and a free bike demo courtesy of BikeLane await. Meet at Purple Carrot, 1120 2 Ave S.


13th Street North: Lethbridge's Streetcar Suburb - 1:00 PM

The role of streetcars in the urban development of Canada and the distinctive morphology of streetcar suburbs. Traditional shopping streets in the new millennium and commercial land use dynamics. What would Jane Jacobs say about 13th Street North if she were with us today? Meet at Dollarama, 104 13th St N.


London Road Walk - 1:30 PM

Join our London Road neighbourhood walk to learn about the history of unique homes and buildings in the neighbourhood! We will meet at 1:15 PM and begin the walk at 1:30 PM, with our walk ending at Urban Grocer. Meet at the North entrance to Kinsmen Park (at the top of the hill)


Southminster United Church: Opening the Doors on a Community Landmark - 2:00 PM + 2:30 PM

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of this landmark building, running from the balcony to the boiler room. Originally constructed in 1913-14, Southminster has witnessed many historical junctures in the City of Lethbridge and has adapted to meet them. You might be familiar with public spaces used for concerts or pickle ball, but this tour will reveal more than a few hidden corners and share stories of the people who have been part of this place. Meet at the front doors of Southminster United Church, 1011 4 Ave S.

There will be two tour sessions, one beginning at 2:00 PM and one beginning at 2:30 PM. Please register for the correct time as spaces are limited.

Doors Open 2025 - 10:00 AM - REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Lead walks to historic buildings in the downtown. Tours will then be offered inside the buildings and then the group returned to Galt Gardens. A program about the building's significance will be provided as will an opportunity for questions/conversations. A rare opportunity to see the inside of the newly renovated Whitney Block. Then discover the rich and diverse history of The Lady Luck Lounge! Meet at Galt Gardens - REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.


Together We Are Amazing: Groups Who Have and Continue to Build Lethbridge and Canada - 1:00 PM

Since the start of Lethbridge, clubs, societies, leagues and groups have had fun, shaped our community for the better through their fund-raising, community building activities, programs, events and more. Discover what groups have done in the past and what they continue to do today to build connections, strengthen democracy, combat loneliness and work on behalf of all of us. Throughout the tour representatives from various groups will share their clubs story and activities and inspire all of us to do more together. Meet at the Hungarian Hall, 410 2 Ave S.
