WHAT IS AN AREA REDEVELOPMENT PLAN (ARP)?

An Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) is a plan that focuses on the physical environment in a neighbourhood. It guides physical changes – like what is built and where – over the next generation.

An ARP speaks to:

Neighbourhood vision

  • What is unique about the neighbourhood?
  • What is important to community members?

Land use

  • How is land used?
  • What could be built and where?
  • What kinds of businesses are allowed where?
  • What kind of housing is available?

Infrastructure

  • Things like water, sewer lines, and other utilities.

Neighbourhood cultural & heritage resources

  • How is culture reflected in neighbourhood places?
  • What is important in the neighbourhood’s history?

Public spaces & facilities

  • What spaces are accessible to everyone in the neighbourhood?
  • Where do people spend time outside?

Transportation, accessibility & connections

  • How do people move around the neighbourhood?

This is the first Area Redevelopment Plan for the Senator Buchanan neighbourhood (there has not been an ARP for the neighbourhood previously). It will include policies that consider public input, other City of Lethbridge policies, and technical research. These three different types of information are not independent and must be considered together.

In the coming months, there will be opportunities for us to discuss the topics above and for you to provide your thoughts!
