What upgrades are happening at the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant?

As part of the City’s long-term infrastructure strategy, the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant is undergoing major upgrades to boost capacity and reliability. The project includes two key components:

  • Process Redundancy Upgrades: Construction of a new high-rate water clarifier to support the two existing 40-year-old solid contact clarifiers.
  • Medium Voltage Electrical Upgrades: Replacement of aging electrical infrastructure with new transformers, dual electrical feeds and modern switchgear to prevent power supply failures and improve system redundancy.

The main goals of the project are to:

  • Double the “firm” treatment capacity from 75 million liters per day (MLD) to 150 MLD, ensuring reliable service even during major equipment outages.
  • Enable future expansion to meet long-term water needs.
  • Improve water reliability for current and future residential, commercial and industrial development in Lethbridge and surrounding communities.
  • Support regional economic growth, especially in agri-food and manufacturing industries, by providing a stable and scalable water supply.

How does the project impact residents?

While most of the work will occur within the Water Treatment Plant facility, residents may notice:

  • Increased construction activity near the plant site.
  • Temporary pathway closures in Botterill Bottom Park.
  • Temporary traffic adjustments for large equipment delivery.

There will be no disruption to water service during construction. The City and its contractor, Graham Construction, are committed to minimizing community impacts and maintaining safety throughout the project.

Next Steps

Lethbridge is taking an important step to make sure our water treatment system stays strong and reliable. With new upgrades that add backup processes and electrical systems, the City is working to keep water flowing smoothly - even during busy seasons or when equipment needs repair. It’s all about preventing disruptions and making sure residents can count on consistent service.

Looking ahead, the City is already advancing the design for future expansions. These will increase the plant’s firm capacity to 180 million liters per day (MLD). These upcoming improvements will include:

  • Construction of additional high-rate clarifiers
  • Upgrades to filtration systems
  • Replacement of aging pumps
  • Enhancements to UV disinfection systems

This will support population growth and regional development. With support from the Alberta Community Partnership program, the City is ensuring that Lethbridge and surrounding municipalities have a resilient and scalable water supply for years to come.
