Consultation has concluded

The City of Lethbridge is beginning a functional planning and design process for 5 Avenue N and 13 Street along the following focus areas, including intersections:

  • 5 Avenue N, from Stafford Drive N to 43 Street N (excluding the section between 23 Street and 28 Street N)
  • 13 Street, from 26 Avenue N to 16 Avenue S (and 16 Avenue S from Scenic Drive S to 13 Street S)
  • Options that include Bicycle Boulevards on 12C Street N and 15 Street S
  • 16 Avenue S from Scenic Drive S to 13 Street S

These corridors have been selected for reasons:

  1. 5 Avenue N and 13 Street are important corridors connecting residential areas in north Lethbridge with downtown, the hospital and Hwy 3.
  2. Traffic is increasing on 5 Avenue N and 13 Street. As a result, the City anticipates the infrastructure upgrades will be required to improve safety, accessibility and vibrancy.
  3. The City of Lethbridge's Cycling Master Plan identifies 13 Street, from 26 Avenue N to 16 Avenue S and 5 Avenue N, from Stafford Drive N to 43 Street N as important protected bike lane connections within the City's bicycle network.
  4. 16 Avenue S between 13 Street S and Scenic Drive S is a short section of roadway with many conflict points.

How can you shape the future of 5 Avenue N and 13 Street ?

The City wants to understand how you use 5 Avenue N and 13 Street today and also wants you to imagine what it could look like in the future.

Gathering public and stakeholder input is a vital part of this functional planning and design process and we take your feedback seriously.

Your input will contribute to the goal of this project: To plan and design 5 Avenue N and 13 Street into corridors that consider, accommodate and design for all modes of transportation.

Community participation in this study will help the City identify existing challenges and opportunities along 5 Avenue N and 13 Street, develop road design options and develop different solutions to determine preferred designs.

We want to understand your engagement experience!

In spring, summer and fall 2019, were able to connect with community members in-person. However, in spring/summer 2020, we adjusted our engagement events online to meet the shifting needs of the City and its stakeholders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We want to understand which elements of the engagement process worked for you and where we might be able to improve for future projects.

We have heard from you that safety and comfort for people walking, people cycling and people driving are the most important themes for the redesign of the 5 Avenue N and 13 Street corridors. Maintaining sufficient parking and efficient traffic flow where also important elements based on the feedback we have heard. The following three options are being considered based on these values.

Planning has begun for the 5 Avenue N and 13 Street corridors as well as the 16 Avenue S connection between 13 Street S and Scenic Drive S. In the spring, we asked the community about issues and opportunities along these corridors to help shape future plans. We’ve taken the information you provided and now have a variety of options to show you. Once again, we want your feedback! We want to know which options you like and don’t like to help inform the designs for these important roads.
