Through Public Safety Canada, the City of Lethbridge received $665,618 from the Building Safer Communities Fund. The purpose of the grant is to evaluate and address gang and gun violence through preventative measures that are youth focused. The City will be completing a needs assessment to better understand how gang and gun violence happen in our community. The assessment provides Lethbridge the opportunity to:

  • advance in community-based preventative strategies to address current needs within the community,
  • identify gaps in services,
  • identify risk factors contributing to gang/gun violence,
  • help develop preventative solutions.


This funding supports the City and Lethbridge Police Service in developing community-based preventative initiatives to support youth in our community.


City of Lethbridge's Priority Areas

Develop a Community Clean and Safe Strategy

  • Building on the Downtown Clean and Safe Strategy, the development of a Clean and Safe Strategy will apply more broadly to the whole community. This Strategy will bring together the City, community residents and stakeholders to address issues regarding safety and identify high-priority local risk factors.

Develop and implement prevention initiatives to support youth

  • Create evidence-informed prevention initiatives that will support youth who are at high-risk of gang affiliation/violence

Build city-wide education programs to support organizations, community members, caregivers, and youth

    Community Safety Survey

    This survey is an opportunity for you to have your voice heard. 


    The COVID-19 pandemic and the economic uncertainty that followed have created new and amplified existing community safety and well-being challenges in many Canadian municipalities, including Lethbridge (e.g., encampments, more visible mental health and/or addiction issues, rising perceptions of crime, etc.). Over the past several years, the City of Lethbridge has completed studies and developed several plans and policies, such as the Community Clean and Safe Strategy and Community Wellbeing and Safety Strategy, to address important safety and well-being concerns in the community. 

    To continue this work, the City is seeking to build upon existing local strategies and identify new, tangible solutions that will help create a safer and healthier Lethbridge for all community members. Your participation in this survey (approximately 5-10 minutes to complete) is vital to this process. This survey will be open from December 15, 2023, to January 19, 2024.

    Confidentiality and Data Privacy 

    The City is working with StrategyCorp, a strategic advisory firm, to help update relevant City plans, studies, and policies to better reflect current community safety and well-being needs and priorities. The survey is being directly managed by StrategyCorp, and all survey responses will remain confidential and anonymous. Results will only be shared and/or published in aggregate form. 


    Your participation in this survey is voluntary, and you can withdraw from the survey at any time simply by stopping the survey.
