The Curbside Organics program started for all houses and semi-detached houses within Lethbridge in May 2023. Residents living in apartments and condominiums started their organic curbside collection in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. Like many other municipalities, in order to plan and operate the program efficiently, it needs to be universally implemented across the entire community. Therefore, there is no option to opt out of the Curbside Organics program.

Residential curbside organics collection includes a weekly collection of green carts during the summer (May – October) and a bi-weekly collection of green carts during the winter (November – April). This seasonal approach considers the seasonal variation of yard waste material and addresses the potential odour and “yuck factor” issues that others have observed during warmer seasons.

Today, three years into the program, organic waste still makes up a significant portion of landfilled residential waste, according to Waste & Environment. Residents seem more likely to use their green carts for yard waste than food scraps. Waste & Environment wants to understand current green cart behaviours and identify barriers to help guide future education and outreach initiatives.

Please complete the short survey below which will help us understand current green cart behaviours, identify challenges residents may face and learn how we can better support participation in the Curbside Organics program.
