Land Use Bylaw Information

The land use bylaw is the municipality’s primary tool to control and regulate how all land is used and developed in the community. It is, therefore, arguably one of Lethbridge’s most important documents as it has significant implications for how the community is shaped. Simply explained, it specifies:

  • How land may be used;
  • Where a building can go on a site
  • Building’s height and size
  • Other provisions to enable good city building
    • Landscaping
    • Mobility and Accessibility
    • Parking

A newly numbered Land Use Bylaw (LUB 6300) was adopted by Council in 2020, and the bylaw is now being reviewed to realign its regulations with the community's vision.

This page will be used to gather feedback regarding proposed amendments over the next two years.

  • How parking is provided and managed plays a powerful role in shaping how communities are built and how residents get around.

    Parking is provided in 2 ways:

    • On-street (typically public parking), and
    • Off-street parking (parking lots or parkades).

    The Land Use Bylaw has rules around off-street parking, specifically how many parking spaces must be provided on a property, depending on the use. This is called a minimum parking requirement.

    The City's goal is to make sure parking regulations are meeting the needs of people in Lethbridge and that businesses have flexibility and choice in how parking is provided and used. If new rules are approved by Council, changes to parking on private property in a defined area would happen gradually over time as new buildings are built and properties are redeveloped.
