Artist-led engagement

A series of artist-led community engagement activities will take place throughout July and August 2025 as part of the Public Art Master Plan update project. These events, designed and facilitated by local artists and culture bearers, invite residents to explore their relationships with Lethbridge’s public spaces, share aspirations for future public art, and contribute directly to the development of the updated Master Plan. Through interactive and creative approaches such as art bike tours, co-created visioning walls, Indigenous social dancing, and guided conversations, the artist-led activations aim to reflect the diversity of voices and experiences in our city. Residents of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to participate, offering input on where and how public art can better represent the stories, identities, and landscapes of Lethbridge.

Community Discussion Toolkit

Your voice – and the voices of your community – are essential in shaping the future of public art and placemaking in Lethbridge. Host your own Community Discussion with this toolkit to reflect on Lethbridge’s cultural identity and to imagine the future of public art in our city. Whether you gather around a kitchen table, at a local park, or on a walk, every conversation matters and we want to hear from you!

Background

This project is to update the City of Lethbridge’s 2012 Public Art Master Plan. The City’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP) identifies the need to ensure the future advancement of public art by providing continuous support to the Public Art Program. The MDP recommends that the Public Art Master Plan be regularly updated to ensure that City support for Public Art is sufficient, and that it addresses potential barriers and community needs. The current Public Art Master Plan is over ten years old, and much has changed in Lethbridge since it was written.

The need for an updated Public Art Master Plan is also identified in the City’s Civic Culture Plan which was adopted by Council in principle in June 2024. This Plan establishes a shared vision that will guide the City’s cultural policy development, including Public Art. It sets long-term direction and provides a lens through which decisions can be made and resources allocated. The Plan’s vision, focus areas, and strategies call for transformative change and a shift in the City’s policies, practices, and allocation of resources. The Civic Culture Plan calls for a review of the Public Art Program in the context of placemaking to create a more comprehensive framework for cultural activations that enhance civic spaces, encourage dialogue, and contribute to a vibrant public realm.
