Key concepts of the Master Plan are waste reduction and waste diversion, meaning items stay out of the landfill to begin with. This is mostly done by using the three Rs framework: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The City of Lethbridge has waste diversion targets specific to the residential sector. Targets in the residential sector are measured by calculating the amount of diverted material relative to the amount of waste generated overall.
The current Waste Diversion Policy goals for the residential sector are:
- By 2030, 65% waste diversion
In order to meet the 2030 goal, the City implement additional waste diversion methods. The following questions will help the City understand current challenges with waste reduction and diversion and the level of support for new ideas to meet the 2030 target.
