Current Engagement Opportunities

Phase two engagement will take place between January to June 2025 and will focus on gathering input from the community on key topics that the Land Use Bylaw affects and for which there is potential for regulatory change. Engagement efforts will help the project team understand what issues the community faces for these topics, and what kind and amount of change the community would support to address these issues. Workshops

These workshops are part of Phase 2 engagement for the Land Use Bylaw Renewal Project. Register to roll up your sleeves and work with City staff to examine current challenges related to the LUB and help identify preferred solutions!

1. Workshop #1: Parking. (March 19, 3 - 5 p.m.) This workshop will focus on the amount of off-street parking required by the LUB. Register here!

2. Workshop #2: Neighbourhoods & Notifications. (March 19, 6 - 8 p.m.) This workshop will focus on discussions about Lethbridge’s neighbourhoods, including housing, neighbourhood-scaled commercial uses, and how people are notified about new development proposals. Register here!

3. Workshop #3: Local Businesses & the Economy. (March 20, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.) This workshop will focus on the strengthening of Lethbridge’s local businesses and how the LUB can be simplified to make business establishment and adaptation easier. Register here!

4. Workshop #4: Downtown. (March 20, 1 - 3 p.m.) This workshop will focus on the character and development of Downtown, and how the LUB can be revised to improve its vibrancy, viability, and resilience. Register here!

These "Decoding" papers are designed to provide you with background information to empower you to take part in upcoming engagement events equipped with a deeper understanding of the topic.

About the Project

From 2023-2026, the City is conducting a complete review and rewrite of the Land Use Bylaw.

The Land Use Bylaw sets out the rules for what kind of building or activity can take place on private property and outlines the process for issuing Development Permits that give approval for new buildings and activities. You would typically interact with the Land Use Bylaw if you are planning to build on your property or move your business. To learn more about the Land Use Bylaw visit this page. Using the Municipal Development Plan as a guide, this project will ensure the rules and opportunities to develop and use property are written to create a safe, healthy, vibrant and economically prosperous community. During this project there will be many opportunities for the public and stakeholders to participate and shape the future of the Land Use Bylaw.

• Phase One of the project, which looked at social uses, ran from August 2023 - February 2024.

• Phase Two which looks at all other topics relevant to the Land Use Bylaw (e.g., housing, downtown, commercial, industrial) will conduct public engagement from January to June 2025.
• Phase Three, beginning in fall 2025, will involve the project team taking everything heard from the public and Council and drafting a new Land Use Bylaw.
• Phase Four will see the draft new Land Use Bylaw shared with the public for feedback and revisions, before submitting to City Council for a final decision through a public hearing process. Completion of Phase 4 is anticipated in late 2026.
