Every year, parks around the City of Lethbridge are updated to keep conditions optimal for public use. Construction projects typically occur during the warmer spring and summer months, and last anywhere from a day or two to the entire season, depending on where the project is located and what is being done.

Projects that you can expect to find in Lethbridge parks this summer include:

  • 2021 Park Projects

    Drainage and Erosion Repairs

    Construction will address drainage and erosion issues at four west side parks, including:

    • Coachwood Point
    • Coalbanks Park
    • Firelight Park
    • Heritage Circle Park

    The work entails drainage improvements using a combination of drain tile, catch basins, re-grading, and repair work.


    Henderson Park Irrigation

    This lifecycle project will wrap up the final portion of the irrigation replacement around Spitz stadium batting cages, rose gardens and horse shoe pits. All turf rehabilitation will be completed as well. Project is scheduled to be complete by May.


    Legacy Park

    • Spray Park - ongoing construction, scheduled to be complete fall 2021.
    • Discovery Playground - Construction will begin around June 1 and be complete fall 2021.
    • Community Picnic Shelter - construction is nearly complete on the bookable picnic shelter.


    Pathways

    • Elizabeth Hall Wetland - existing pathways will be rehabilitated - Fall 2021
    • Bark Park - pathways will be added to the project this summer
    • Henderson Park - rubber surfaced pathway from central playground to surrounding amenities including washroom, picnic shelter and main pathway will be completed in 2021
    • Legacy Park - rubber surfaced pathways in and around future discovery playground will be completed 2021


    Playground Rubber Surfacing - COMPLETE MAY 20 2021

    Construction will take place in 2021 for the replacement of pea gravel playground surfacing with poured-in-place rubber surfacing at four existing playgrounds, including:

    • Bluefox Park
    • Fairmont Park
    • Lakeview Green Strip North (Active 20-30 Playground)
    • William Pearce Park

    This project will also replace the existing rubber surfacing at Henderson Park playground as it has reached the end of its useful life.

    Rubber surfacing will increase the safety and accessibility for these playgrounds.


    Peenaquim Park Disc Golf

    Parks is working with the Lethbridge Disc Golf Association to install a dryland, low maintenance 18 hole disc golf course in Peenaquim Park. Course will have its own parking lot and pathways to direct players.

    Drainage and Erosion Repairs

    Construction has begun on this project which will address drainage and erosion issues at five sites, including:

    • Blackwolf Park (south-east area): July 20 – 21
    • Elizabeth McKillop Park (north fenceline): July 23 – 24
    • Pavan Park (bottom of the hill, on the equestrian trail): July 27 – 30
    • Coulee Creek Park (east fenceline): August 3 – 6
    • Indian Battle Park (pathway that connects The Galt to Fort Whoop-Up: August 10 – 28

    The work entails drainage improvements using a combination of drain tile, catch basins, regrading, and repair work.


    Pathways

    • Pathway 8 is in the design phase and will be constructed next year.
      • This pathway will connect Legacy Ridge to the off-leash dog area in Peenaquim Park and includes a steel staircase.
    • Pathway 17 construction is complete,
      • This pathway connects Mayor Magrath Drive to 43 Street South
    • Pathway 24 was cancelled

    Construction will take place in 2020 for the replacement of pea gravel playground surfacing with poured-in-place rubber surfacing at four existing playgrounds, including:

    • Fairmont Park

    April 2021 Update:

    Finishing touches on the irrigation replacement at Henderson Park are underway and scheduled to be complete by the end of April.

    July 21, 2020 Update:

    Originally planned to include a summer break to accommodate major summer activities, this project is now ahead of schedule. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and the cancellation of all 2020 public events in Henderson Lake Park, construction has continued on the irrigation replacement and is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2020. With restrictions around public gatherings easing, and more events allowed to take place in and around the city, construction will continue in Henderson Lake Park.

    The City is asking for patience and understanding from the public and park users as we work diligently to finish the park. The previous parking lot closure at the east end of the park is now open as the construction laydown area has been moved to the northern end of the west parking lot (along Mayor Magrath Drive). The south end of this lot will be open for public use throughout the duration of this project

    Project Info

    Henderson Lake Park's irrigation system is approaching 25 years of use and is scheduled for lifecycle replacement in the coming year. Construction will take place starting fall 2019 and continue into early spring. No work will take place between early June to end of August 2020 in order for major annual special events to proceed as usual.

    All work is scheduled to be complete by June 2021.

    July 2020 Update: This project has been canceled


    Pathway 24 is proposed for development in the river valley. This 6.4 km limestone pathway would connect the southern coulee of Lethbridge College to Botterill Bottom Park, west of the Scenic Drive Dog Run.
