This project is the reconstruction of 3 Avenue South, from 4 Street South to 8 Street South in Downtown Lethbridge. Originating in the Public Realm and Transportation Study (PRATS) (2012), this project was approved by City Council in the current Capital Improvement Program (CIP) 2018-2027, under D-22.

The vision for 3 Avenue is to create a more vibrant downtown and an environment that offers a safe, lively, accessible and attractive place to work, live, shop, learn and play. This will be achieved through design techniques known as streetscaping, which includes street furniture such as benches, planters, trees, garbage cans, and decorative street lighting. A general promotion of mobility and accessibility will be included through elements such as raised parking areas; bulb-outs at the intersections to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and increase visibility; widening of sidewalks; and a multi-use pathway. A unique design characteristic includes a raised intersection at 6 Street South which will enhance the user experience for festivals and special events.

The City would like to involve all stakeholders in the development of a construction staging plan that balances the needs of the businesses, residents, and the community to minimize impact during construction and maintain access.

I am curious as to the thought process regarding expansion of benches and planters - which were largely removed the last time the city sought to "beautify" the downtown core as a result of same being used primarily by transient persons. Will this be yet another poorly considered tax-payer expense similar to the "self-cleaning" bathroom on 6th Street South?

It seems a very good idea but just putting chairs on a street corner isn’t enough. Support has to be given to the groups such as the BBq cook off, the street wheelers show and others who have brought people downtown in the past

So glad to see this project moving forward! Will definitely enhance the living, working, and playing environment of downtown.

Great idea, however our family and friends tend to avoid the downtown area due to safety concerns. This will not encourage us to come downtown.
